Accessibility Statement

What I aim for

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA are the standard I am working towards. Working towards is the honest phrasing: parts of the site almost certainly meet it and parts almost certainly do not, and I have not run a formal audit to find out which is which.

What has been done

• Body text is set at 17px with generous line height, and headings follow a real hierarchy so screen readers and skim-readers both get structure.
• Text colours were chosen against their backgrounds for contrast rather than by eye alone.
• Guides use proper heading levels, which is what the table of contents on each one is built from.
• Interactive elements have visible focus styles for keyboard navigation.
• The site reflows to a single column on small screens and can be zoomed without content being cut off.

Known problems

Being specific here is more useful than a general apology:

• Image alt text is inconsistent. Older guides have photographs with missing or unhelpful alternative text. I am working through them.
• The interactive maps are difficult without a mouse. The maps on the destination pages are supplied by a plugin and are hard to operate by keyboard or screen reader. The information on them is repeated in text on the same page, so nothing is only available on the map.
• Advertising is outside my control. Ads are served by Google and I do not control their markup, contrast or behaviour.
• Some older guides have long, dense paragraphs that are harder to read than they should be. I am shortening them as I revise each one.

Tell me when something does not work

If something here is difficult or impossible for you to use, send me a message. It helps if you can tell me the page, what you were trying to do, and what browser or assistive technology you are using, but a rough description is much better than nothing.

This is a one-person site, so I cannot promise a fix by a particular date. I can promise that I read every message and that I would rather know.

Changes

As problems get fixed and new ones turn up, this page changes. The Last updated date at the top shows when it last did.
